Reviewer Archimedes of the Hong Kong magazine HiFi Review checked out the UC1. Although the UC1 is developed for pro audio use, its sound quality attracted him. And he found that the extra functions deliver a lot of fun for hifi enthusiastis.
“The UC1v2 has so many features that the company calls it ‘Universal Converter’, which simply and directly shows how versatile it is. (…) Before I received the unit, I thought it would be complicated to use and it would require a computer to access various functions. But I was wrong. The operation of the UC1 is very simple, and the menu arrangement is clear. You only need to use the two buttons on the panel and a pushable knob, and via a seemingly small but clear display the various functions can be set easily. (…)
As the saying goes, neutral products are the hardest to describe, just as there are only few people in the world who are a ‘water tasting expert’. Fortunately the UC1 makes neutral sound fun. Its reproduction is faithful, direct and highly detailed. The positions and levels of the various sources in the stereo image are clearly rendered and, for me even more important, they have vivid dynamics and colors. (…)
The super analytical and at the same time neutral power of the Grimm Audio UC1 can faithfully reproduce different types of recordings with lots of details. I heard things I did not notice before with familiar recordings. In addition to the details, the style and quality of different albums and the timbres and textures of different instruments were much clearer than before. I was surprised that my playback system could deliver such a wide color range, bringing freshness to the music.”
