Jürgen Schröder of the well known German online audiophile magazine Lowbeats published a great review of the PW1. He took the PW1 to a ‘vinyl paradise’ shop to compare it with three other phono preamplifiers on four different cartridges. And he was pleasantly surprised…
“Although the Grimm Audio PW1 was the most affordable (…if one can even say that) of all the phono preamps in the test setup, the illustrious surroundings by no means embarrassed it in terms of sound. I still remember the opening bars of the album “Wide Awake” by the Amsterdam duo Haevn; which, played through the PW1, elicited a spontaneous but appreciative “Wow!” from me. Consequently, my test notes are filled with compliments such as “stable focus with smooth, unobtrusive contour sharpness, effortless naturalness, tonal elegance.” (…)
The Grimm Audio PW1 behaved by no means elite. Sure it excelled convincingly with absolute world-class pickups like the Lyra Etna Lambda. And inevitably it clearly demonstrated the systemic sound differences between cartridge types. But it also helped budget MM pickups like the Nagaoka MP-150 to achieve remarkable performance. At the end of a long day of listening tests, I was certain: if I had to choose between the candidates, I would choose the Grimm Audio PW1 without hesitation.”
